The Helper – Andrew

Andrew, the brother of Peter, beautifully exemplifies the role of Helps within the body of Christ. His character and actions reveal a heart devoted to bringing others to Jesus and assisting in ministry work, often in the background and without seeking recognition. The role of Helps is marked by support, practical assistance, and a willingness to serve without the need for prominence. Andrew’s actions throughout the Gospels demonstrate this calling with humility and dedication.

One of the earliest glimpses of Andrew’s heart for service is when he meets Jesus. As soon as he recognizes Jesus as the Messiah, his first response is to find his brother, Peter, and bring him to Jesus (John 1:41-42). This act is simple yet profound—Andrew is not seeking the spotlight for himself but focuses on connecting others with Jesus. This selflessness is a hallmark of the role of Helps, as Andrew quietly serves as a bridge for others to meet Christ.

Another example of Andrew’s supportive nature is seen in the feeding of the five thousand. In John 6:8-9, when Jesus faces a crowd needing food, Andrew notices a young boy with five loaves and two fish. While others might overlook such a small offering, Andrew brings it to Jesus, trusting that even the little they have can be used to meet the crowd’s needs. His faith in bringing resources to Jesus, no matter how small, reflects the role of Helps: providing practical assistance and trusting God to multiply it.

Andrew’s humility and dedication are further evident in his willingness to remain in the background. While his brother Peter often takes a prominent role among the disciples, Andrew continues to serve faithfully, content to be in the background and support the ministry. His name does not appear in every pivotal moment, yet he consistently serves, bringing others to Jesus, whether it is his brother, a child with loaves and fish, or Gentiles seeking Jesus (John 12:20-22).

In Andrew, we see that the role of Helps is about meeting practical needs and pointing others to Christ. His life exemplifies quiet service, humility, and a readiness to assist whenever needed. Andrew’s actions remind us that support roles are vital in the kingdom, as they enable others to encounter Jesus and provide the foundation on which the church’s ministry thrives.
