The Exhorter – Thomas
Thomas, often remembered as “Doubting Thomas,” exemplifies the role of an exhorter within the body of Christ—a role dedicated to encouraging, challenging, and strengthening others in their faith. While Thomas is best known for his moment of doubt in John 20:24-29, his overall character reveals someone who spurs others on to a deeper, more genuine relationship with Jesus, often by voicing questions and seeking understanding that others may hesitate to express.
One of the earliest examples of Thomas’s exhortative nature appears in John 11:16. When Jesus returns to Judea to raise Lazarus, the disciples are fearful because the Jewish leaders had previously sought to stone Him. In response, Thomas boldly says, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.” Thomas’s words are not just a statement of loyalty; they encourage others to stay committed and courageous despite the risks. His willingness to face danger alongside Jesus exemplifies the heart of an exhorter who inspires others to stand firm and move forward in faith, even in uncertain times.
The most famous instance involving Thomas is his reaction to Jesus’ resurrection. After missing Jesus’ initial appearance to the disciples, Thomas expresses doubt, stating he needs to see and touch Jesus’ wounds to believe (John 20:25). Yet, this moment of doubt ultimately leads to a profound declaration of faith, as Thomas proclaims, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). By voicing his doubts openly, Thomas reveals a critical aspect of exhortation—encouraging others to seek a genuine, personal encounter with Christ rather than a superficial faith. Jesus does not condemn Thomas; instead, He meets him in doubt, allowing Thomas to affirm his belief more deeply and fully. Thomas’s journey encourages believers to bring their questions and struggles to Jesus, trusting that genuine faith grows through honesty and revelation.
In these moments, Thomas’s life shows that exhortation is not about having unshakable confidence but about fostering faith, courage, and authenticity. His words and actions inspire others to seek a deeper understanding of Christ, even when questions arise. Thomas exemplifies the exhorter’s role by challenging believers to pursue a genuine relationship with Jesus, showing that honesty and resilience in faith can lead to powerful declarations of belief. Through Thomas, we see that exhortation sometimes begins in doubt but always leads back to a firmer faith.
